The East India Company was created in 1600 for trading by English merchants.

The British government effectively abolished the Company in 1858.

It was suppressed in the middle of 1858 by the British.

Bahadur Shah II, also known as Zafar, was the last Mughal emperor,

On 29 March 1857, Sepoy Mangal Pandey attacked his officers near Calcutta.

The revolt began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in Meerut.

The State of Awadh entered into a subsidiary alliance with the Company government in 1801.

Bahadur Shah Zafar blessed the mutiny and this event changed the situation and gave strength to the Sepoy mutiny.

Tantia Tope escaped to the jungles of Central India and continued to fight a guerrilla war with the support of many tribals and peasants leaders.

• British introduced important social reforms in the country.
• For example, the Bengal Sati Regulation Act was passed in 1829, declaring the practise of Sati as illegal.
• The Widow Remarriage Act in 1856.
• The promotion of english education through schools.
• These reforms received mixed response from Indians.
