The members of the Gram Sabha elect a Sarpanch, who serves as the President of the Gram Panchayat. The Sarpanch is the head of the Panchayat and is responsible for its functioning.

The Gram Panchayat is typically elected for a term of five years. After the completion of the term, elections are held to form a new Gram Panchayat.

The Gram Sabha plays an important role in keeping an eye on elected representatives and making them accountable to the people who elected them. It serves as a forum for the villagers to participate in the decision-making process.
