Every year on 21st May, National Anti-Terrorism Day is celebrated across the country. On this day in 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bomb blast. This day is celebrated to combat the global threat and raise awareness about the importance of unity. Rajiv Gandhi assumed the post of Prime Minister after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 and held this post from 1984 to 1989.

Every year May 20 is celebrated as World Refugee Day. This day was celebrated for the first time on 20 May 2001. The year 2001 also marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. India has not signed the 1951 Refugee Convention, but has been active in UNHCR since 1981.  

The Iranian government has confirmed the death of President Ibrahim Raisi, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. President Raisi was returning after attending a dam inauguration ceremony on Iran's border with Azerbaijan. The Government of India condoled the death of Raisi and announced a day of mourning on 21 May 2024.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has signed an MoU with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), India for digitalization of vaccine cold chain management, capacity building and communication planning.

William Lai Ching-te was sworn in as president of Taiwan, accompanied by a 21-gun salute. He praised Taiwan’s democracy and called on China to end its intimidation. Lai and Vice President Hsia Bi-khim took their oaths beneath a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, the Republic of China’s founder, in a ceremony at the presidential building in Taipei.

Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi won gold medals for India at the 3rd Elorda Cup 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Zareen defeated Kazakhstan’s Zhazira Urakbayeva in the 52 kg category, while Minakshi overcame Uzbekistan’s Saidakhon Rakhmonova in the 48 kg category. India’s 21-member boxing contingent secured a total of 12 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver, and 8 bronze.

On May 19, 2024, Iran’s hardline President Ebrahim Raisi tragically died in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. Raisi, a significant political figure and potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was viewed as pivotal in Iran’s leadership. His unexpected death has profoundly impacted both Iran and the international community.

World Bee Day, observed on May 20, marks Anton Janša’s birth anniversary, a beekeeping pioneer. Established by the UN in 2017, it highlights bees’ crucial roles in food security, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture. The 2024 theme, “Bee engaged with Youth,” focuses on involving young people in bee conservation efforts to protect these essential pollinators.
