It is the bond of physical impairment that unites old Mr Lamb and the small boy, Derry. He got his leg blown off during the war and since then he has a tin leg. Derry got one side of his face burnt by acid. Their respective disabilities have not only caused pain and suffering to the body but to their mind and soul as well. They have to live with their physical impairment. Mr Lamb has adjusted himself to the ways of the world and stopped bothering about what people call him. He keeps himself busy in meaningful activities like picking apples, making jelly, bee-keeping and preparing toffee from honey. He loves reading books, hearing music, observing beautiful things and thinking about them. He inspires the small boy by saying that he has all the God-given organs intact. He has to decide what to do. He must work for it and then he can outshine even the others. Derry admits that ‘Handsome is he who handsome does.’ For him his face or how he looks does not matter now. He has become positive and has started thinking differently.

Lamb helped Derry develop a positive outlook and instilled faith and confidence in him. Derry had confined himself and looking at this Mr. Lamb decided to help the little boy fly high by teaching him some essential morals of life. He wanted to see Derry happy and confident.

Lamb was a very amiable and friendly person who would get into the conversation with the passersby and allow children to play in his garden. Derry knew that people lied and showed sympathy only to comfort him and that he would not change and would continue to look like a ‘monstrous beast’.

Mr. Lamb was happy in spite of his disability as he was an experienced middle aged man with wisdom collected from his past life. Though he was also handicapped, yet he had not allowed himself to be overcome by the adversities of life. He maintained an optimistic outlook.

Derry, a complex-stricken lad of fourteen, is a victim of inferiority complex which is borne out of a misinterpretation of himself and the world. He suffers from an acute sense of self-hatred and rejection due to his burnt face and this leads him to total alienation.

Lamb's positive attitude towards life, his way of living, his optimistic character, friendly behaviour and finally he wanted to live his life to the fullest. These are the qualities of Mr. Lamb that attracted Derry towards him.

Derry knows the idea that the story, Beauty and the Beast, talks about. It talks about inner beauty and how, irrespective of the outside appearances, the inside always turns out victorious. He says that in reality nobody would ever kiss a Beast nor would the Beast ever transform as it happens in the story.

Derry was startled on entering the garden because he had not expected anybody there. When he entered there, he found that somebody else was already present there.
