Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 3

A man rows a boat 28 km in 4 hours downstream and same distance upstream in 7 hours. The speed of the stream (in km/hr).

Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 4

A boat goes at the speed of 6 km/hr in still water but it takes thrice as much time in going the same distance against the current. The speed of the current (in km/hr) is

Detailed Solution for Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 4
Let the velocity of the boat be v km/h and velocity of the current be u km/h.

When the boat goes in still water, its velocity is v=6 km/h.

When the boat goes against the current, its velocity is v-u=(6-u) km/h.

For distance S, time taken in still water to cover the distance = S/6 hous

For same distance S, time taken while going against the current = S/(6-u) hours.

According to given, S/(6-u) = 3*(S/6)

=> 1/(6-u) = 1/2
=> 6-u = 2
=> u=4 km/h.

So, the speed of the current is 4 km/h.
Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 5

A man can row 40 km upstream and 55 km downstream in 13 hours. Also he can row 30 km upstream and 44 km down stream in 10 hours. What is his speed in still water and the speed of the current.

Detailed Solution for Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 5
let rate upstream=x km/hr and rate downstream=y km/hr.

Then, 40/x +55/y =13… (i) and 30/x +44/y =10

Multiplying (ii) by 4 and (i) by 3 and subtracting, we get:11/y=1 or y=11.

Substituting y=11 in (i),we get:x=5.

Rate in still water =1/2(11+5)kmph=8kmph.

Rate of current=1/2(11-5)kmph=3kmph
Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 6

A man’s speed with the current is 15 km/hr and the speed of the current is 3 km/hr. what will be the man’s speed against the current.

Detailed Solution for Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 6
This is easy!
When the man rows with the current his speed would be = His speed+Current's speed.
It is given the speed with current is = 15 Km/hr
speed of current = 3 Km/hr
so the speed of the man without current = 15-3= 12 Km/hr

so speed against current = Man's speed - Current's speed
so answer would be = 12-3= 9 Km/hr
Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 7

A boat can travel with a speed of 13 km/hr in still water. If the speed of the stream is 4 km/hr, find the time taken by the boat to go 51 km downstream.

Detailed Solution for Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 7

The correct option is B.
Speed downstream = (13 + 4) km/hr = 17 km/hr.

Time taken to travel 68 km downstream = 51/17hrs = 3hrs.

Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 8

A motor boat goes 10 km upstream and back again to the starting point in 55 minutes. Find the speed of the motor boat in still water, if Stream running at 2 mph

Detailed Solution for Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 8

The correct option is C.
Let speed of motor boat = x
downstream speed = x + 2
upstream speed = x - 2
so,
10/(x + 2)+10/(x - 2) = 55/60
55(x2)-1200x-220 =0
By solving this equation, we get
x=22

Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 9

A boat, while going upstream, covers a distance of 10 km in 30 minutes and while running down stream, it covers the same distance in 25 minutes. What is the speed of the current in km/hr.

Test: Boats and Streams- 4 - Question 10

I can row 40 km down stream and 28 km upstream taking 10 hours each time – what is the speed of the current.
