FAQs on NCERT Textbook - The Passive - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English- Class 9

1. What is the passive voice?
Ans. The passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject of a sentence is the receiver of the action rather than the doer. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb "be" followed by the past participle of the main verb.
2. How is the passive voice different from the active voice?
Ans. In the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action, while in the passive voice, the subject receives the action. For example, in the active voice, "I ate the cake," the subject "I" is performing the action of eating. In the passive voice, "The cake was eaten by me," the subject "the cake" is receiving the action of being eaten.
3. When should we use the passive voice?
Ans. The passive voice is often used when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action rather than the doer. It is commonly used in scientific writing, formal writing, or when the doer of the action is unknown or unimportant. Additionally, it can be used to be more tactful or to avoid assigning blame.
4. How do we form the passive voice in English?
Ans. To form the passive voice in English, we use the auxiliary verb "be" (in the appropriate tense) followed by the past participle of the main verb. The form of "be" depends on the tense and subject of the sentence. For example, "The book is written by the author" (present simple passive) or "The cake will be baked by her" (future simple passive).
5. What are some common mistakes to avoid when using the passive voice?
Ans. When using the passive voice, it is important to avoid common mistakes such as using unnecessary or excessive passive constructions, using the passive voice when the doer of the action is known and important, or using the wrong form of the auxiliary verb "be." It is also essential to maintain clarity and ensure that the sentence is still grammatically correct and conveys the intended meaning.
