i Long, long ago, when people did not have any pots,
what did those people do?
i Why would people have made pots?
Imagine – one day all the pots disappear from the world.
What will happen in your house?
Many, many years ago, there was a time
when people had no pots. They started feeling the need to
store and cook food. After a lot of effort and thinking, people
learnt to make pots. In the beginning, pots were made of
stone and clay. People made pots of stones by digging and
scraping stones with their hands. They made pots of clay
by kneading the clay and shaping them with their hands.
People also discovered that clay pots could be made
stronger by baking them in fire.

FAQs on NCERT Textbook - Making Pots - EVS for Class 3

1. How do I make pots using the techniques described in the NCERT textbook?
Ans. To make pots using the techniques described in the NCERT textbook, you need to first prepare the clay by kneading it and removing any air bubbles. Then, shape the clay into the desired pot shape using your hands or pottery tools. Once the pot is shaped, let it dry partially before smoothing the surface and adding decorative designs if desired. Finally, fire the pot in a kiln or a bonfire to harden it.
2. What are the different types of clay suitable for making pots?
Ans. There are several types of clay suitable for making pots, including earthenware clay, stoneware clay, and porcelain clay. Earthenware clay is the most common and easiest to work with, while stoneware clay is more durable and suitable for functional pots. Porcelain clay is known for its fine texture and is often used for delicate and intricate pottery pieces.
3. Can I make pots without using a kiln?
Ans. Yes, it is possible to make pots without using a kiln. If you don't have access to a kiln, you can fire your pots using alternative methods such as a bonfire or pit firing. These methods involve placing the pots in a fire and allowing them to heat and harden through the heat generated by the flames. However, it's important to note that the pots fired using these methods may not be as durable or have the same finish as those fired in a kiln.
4. How long does it take to make a pot from start to finish?
Ans. The time it takes to make a pot from start to finish can vary depending on various factors such as the size and complexity of the pot, the type of clay used, and the drying and firing methods employed. On average, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days or even weeks to complete a pot. The process involves preparing the clay, shaping the pot, drying it, smoothing the surface, adding decorative elements, and firing it.
5. Are there any safety precautions I should take while making pots?
Ans. Yes, there are some safety precautions you should take while making pots. Firstly, it's important to work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling clay dust or fumes from the firing process. It's also advisable to wear protective gloves to prevent any skin irritations or allergies caused by the clay. Additionally, be cautious while handling sharp pottery tools and operating kilns or fires. Finally, make sure to follow proper fire safety protocols when firing your pots to prevent accidents.
