Introduction
Batteries are everywhere in modern societies. They provide the electric current to
start our automobiles and to power a host of products such as pocket calculator,
digital watches, heart pacemaker, radio, and tape recorders.
Electrochemistry is the area of chemistry concerned with the interconversion of
chemical and electrical. A battery is a an electrochemical cell, a device for
interconverting chemical and electrical energy. A battery takes the energy released by
a spontaneous chemical reaction and uses it to produce electricity.

FAQs on Flashcards for JEE Chemistry - Electrochemistry Class 12

1. What is electrochemistry?
Ans. Electrochemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of the relationship between electricity and chemical reactions. It involves the use of electrical energy to drive non-spontaneous chemical reactions and the conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy.
2. What are the applications of electrochemistry?
Ans. Electrochemistry has a wide range of applications in various fields. Some of the common applications include electroplating, electrolysis, batteries, fuel cells, corrosion prevention, sensors, and electrochemical analysis techniques such as voltammetry.
3. How does electroplating work?
Ans. Electroplating is a process in which a metal is deposited onto a conductive surface to provide a protective or decorative coating. It involves the use of an electrolytic cell where the object to be plated acts as the cathode, and a metal electrode acts as the anode. When an electric current is passed through the cell, metal cations from the anode are reduced and deposited onto the cathode, resulting in the formation of a metal coating.
4. What is the role of electrolytes in electrochemical cells?
Ans. Electrolytes play a crucial role in electrochemical cells as they provide ions that carry electrical charge and enable the movement of electrons. They help maintain charge balance in the cell and facilitate the migration of ions between the electrodes, allowing for the flow of current. Common electrolytes used in electrochemical cells include aqueous solutions of salts or acids.
5. How does a battery work?
Ans. A battery is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. It consists of one or more electrochemical cells connected in series or parallel. Each cell contains two electrodes - an anode (negative electrode) and a cathode (positive electrode) - immersed in an electrolyte solution. During discharge, a chemical reaction occurs at the electrodes, producing a flow of electrons from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current.
