Chemical Bond
The force of attraction which hold various constuents (atom,
ions etc) together in different chemical species is called a
chemical bond.
Cause of Chemical Bond
(i) Tendency to acquire noble gas configuration :
(a) Noble gases do not react with other elements due to most
stable configuration (8 electrons in outer most shell).
(b) So the remaining elements also try to acquire the same by
loosing, gaining or sharing of electrons.
(c) Lewis octet rule : The tendency of atoms to achieve
eight electrons in their outermost shell is known as Lewis octet
rule.

(b) Born Haber cycle :
The energy changes involved in the formation of ionic
compounds from their constituent elements can be studied
with the help of a thermochemical cycle called as Born-
Haber cycle.
e.g.: Formation of 1 mole of NaCl from sodium and chlorine
?H
f
= S.E + 1/2 D.E + I.E – E.A – u
If ?H f value is more negative, more stable is the formed
product.

FAQs on Flashcards for JEE Chemistry - Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure Class 11

1. What is chemical bonding?
Chemical bonding refers to the process by which atoms are held together in a compound. It involves the sharing, transferring, or rearrangement of electrons between atoms to achieve a more stable electron configuration.
2. What are the different types of chemical bonds?
There are three main types of chemical bonds: ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and metallic bonds. Ionic bonds occur when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of positively and negatively charged ions. Covalent bonds involve the sharing of electrons between atoms, creating a strong bond. Metallic bonds occur between metal atoms and involve a "sea" of delocalized electrons that are shared between the atoms.
3. How does electronegativity influence chemical bonding?
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons towards itself in a chemical bond. When there is a large difference in electronegativity between two atoms, an ionic bond is formed. On the other hand, when the electronegativity difference is small, a covalent bond is typically formed. The greater the electronegativity difference, the more polar the bond becomes.
4. What is the VSEPR theory and how does it explain molecular structure?
The VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory is a model used to predict the shape of molecules based on the repulsion between electron pairs in the valence shell of an atom. According to this theory, electron pairs around a central atom will arrange themselves in a way that minimizes repulsion, resulting in a specific molecular shape. For example, in a molecule with two bonding pairs and no lone pairs, the shape will be linear. The VSEPR theory helps explain the geometry and bond angles in molecules.
5. How does hybridization affect the bonding in molecules?
Hybridization is the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals that are involved in bonding. It allows atoms to achieve a more stable electron configuration. The type of hybridization that occurs depends on the number and types of atomic orbitals involved. For example, in molecules with four electron domains, such as methane (CH4), the carbon atom undergoes sp3 hybridization, resulting in four sp3 hybrid orbitals that form covalent bonds with the four hydrogen atoms. Hybridization influences the geometry and the strength of bonds in molecules.
