REDOX REACTION
REDOX REACTION
• Chemical reactions which involves both
oxidation as well as reduction process
simultaneously, are known as redox reactions
(‘red’) from reduction and ‘ox’ from oxidation)
• All these reactions are always accompanied
by energy change in the form of heat, light or
electricity

REDUCTANTS AND OXIDANTS
• Oxidant or oxidising agent is a chemical substance which can
accept one or more electrons and causes oxidation of some
other species. In other words, the oxidation number of
oxidant decreases in a redox reaction
• Important Oxidants
Molecules of most electronegative elements such as O

halogens.
Compounds having element in its highest oxidation state e.g.,

FAQs on Redox Reaction PPT Chemistry Class 11

1. What is a redox reaction?
Ans. A redox reaction, short for reduction-oxidation reaction, refers to a chemical reaction where there is a transfer of electrons between reactant species. In a redox reaction, one species undergoes oxidation, losing electrons, while another species undergoes reduction, gaining those electrons.
2. How can we identify a redox reaction?
Ans. To identify a redox reaction, we can use the concept of oxidation numbers. If the oxidation number of an element increases during a reaction, it undergoes oxidation, and if the oxidation number decreases, it undergoes reduction. If both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously, it is a redox reaction.
3. Why are redox reactions important in everyday life?
Ans. Redox reactions play a crucial role in everyday life. They are involved in various biological processes, such as cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Additionally, redox reactions are utilized in energy production, corrosion processes, and the functioning of batteries.
4. Are combustion reactions considered redox reactions?
Ans. Yes, combustion reactions are a type of redox reaction. During combustion, a fuel reacts with oxygen to produce heat and light. The fuel is oxidized, while oxygen is reduced, resulting in the transfer of electrons between the reactants.
5. Can you provide an example of a redox reaction?
Ans. One example of a redox reaction is the rusting of iron (Fe). When iron reacts with oxygen (O2) in the presence of water (H2O), iron undergoes oxidation, losing electrons, while oxygen undergoes reduction, gaining those electrons. This results in the formation of iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), commonly known as rust.
