Chapter -IV
Basic Geometrical Ideas
Geometry
? In this chapter we shall study some basic ideas of
geometry, a very fascinating branch of mathematics.
? Geometry is derived from two Greek words which means
measurement of the earth.
? In fact geometry is the study of objects around you. You
notice that there are objects of various shapes in and
around you. The objective of this chapter is to acquaint you
to some of their properties.

Point
? A point is a dot that appears when you put your pencil on
paper . It is very small and has no length, breadth or even
height.
? A point is the smallest possible mark that you can make on
paper with your pencil.
? A point is usually denoted by a capital letter, like A, B, C,
etc.

Line Segment
? A line segment has length, but no breadth and height.
? It has a starting position and an ending position.
? A line segment between two points A and B is denoted by
AB.
? Between any two points A and B, the shortest distance is
the line segment AB.

? A line is a line segment extended beyond the end and
beginning points of the segment.
? It has infinite length, but no breadth and height.
? We cannot draw a line completely because it would then
take infinite space.
? It is enough to know just two points on a line to determine
the line.

FAQs on Basic Geometrical Ideas Class 6 PPT

1. What are the basic geometrical ideas covered in Class 6?
Ans. The basic geometrical ideas covered in Class 6 include points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, and polygons.
2. How can we differentiate between a line segment and a ray?
Ans. A line segment has two distinct endpoints and represents a finite length, whereas a ray has one endpoint and extends infinitely in one direction.
3. What is the difference between a triangle and a quadrilateral?
Ans. A triangle is a polygon with three sides and three angles, while a quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides and four angles.
4. How can we determine if two line segments are equal in length?
Ans. Two line segments are equal in length if they have the same measure or distance between their endpoints.
5. What is the significance of angles in geometry?
Ans. Angles play a crucial role in geometry as they help us measure and describe the amount of rotation or separation between two lines or line segments.
