CHAPTER - 6

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES
1) Changes around us :-
In our daily life we come across several changes.
Eg :-
- Dissolving sugar in water.
- Formation of curd from milk.
- Cooking of food.
- Cutting of a piece of paper.

In a physical change the physical properties like shape,
size, state etc. of the substance changes.
Eg :- Cutting of paper into pieces, Melting of ice,
Boiling of water, Stretching a rubber band etc.
     Some physical changes are reversible.
Eg :- Melting of ice, Boiling of water, Stretching a rubber

During a chemical change the following changes take place :-
  i) Formation of new substances.
ii) Heat or light may be absorbed or released.
iii) Sound may be produced.
iv) A colour change may take place.
 v) A change in smell may take place.
vi) A gas may be formed.

FAQs on Chapter 6 - Physical and Chemical changes - PPT, Science, class 7,CBSE

1. What is a physical change?
Ans. Physical change refers to a change in the physical properties of a substance, such as its shape, size, color, texture, etc., without changing its chemical composition. For example, melting of ice, boiling of water, tearing of paper, breaking of glass, etc., are some examples of physical changes.
2. What is a chemical change?
Ans. Chemical change refers to a change in the chemical composition of a substance, resulting in the formation of a new substance with different properties. During a chemical change, the original substance is transformed into a new substance with different physical and chemical properties. For example, burning of paper, rusting of iron, digestion of food, etc., are some examples of chemical changes.
3. How can we identify whether a change is physical or chemical?
Ans. We can identify whether a change is physical or chemical by observing the nature of the change. If the change only alters the physical properties of the substance without changing its chemical composition, it is a physical change. On the other hand, if the change results in the formation of a new substance with different properties, it is a chemical change.
4. What are the differences between physical and chemical changes?
Ans. Physical changes only alter the physical properties of a substance, such as shape, size, color, texture, etc., without changing its chemical composition. Chemical changes, on the other hand, result in the formation of a new substance with different properties. Physical changes are usually reversible, while chemical changes are usually irreversible. Physical changes do not involve the release or absorption of energy, while chemical changes involve the release or absorption of energy.
5. What are some examples of physical and chemical changes in everyday life?
Ans. Some examples of physical changes in everyday life include melting of ice, boiling of water, tearing of paper, breaking of glass, etc. Some examples of chemical changes in everyday life include burning of paper, rusting of iron, digestion of food, photosynthesis in plants, etc.
