CHAPTER -15

SOME NATURAL PHENOMENA
1) Some natural destructive phenomena :-
Some natural destructive phenomena are cyclones, lightning,
earthquakes etc.
Lightning is streaks of bright light and sound caused by electric
discharge between clouds and earth or between different clouds.
Earthquake is a sudden shaking or trembling of the earth caused by a
disturbance deep inside the earth’s crust.
Lightning and earthquakes cause a lot of damage to human life and
property.

2) Charging by rubbing (friction) :-
Some objects can be charged by rubbing with other objects. When
objects are rubbed, they attract light objects like pieces of paper. This
process is called charging by friction.
Eg :- A plastic refill, scale or comb when rubbed with dry hair, paper
or polythene gets charge and attracts pieces of paper.
The charges acquired by rubbing are static charges. They do not
move. When charges move, it is electric current.
Electric current is the motion of charges through a conductor.

3) Types of charges and their interaction :-
There are two types of charges. They are positive charge
(+) and negative charge (-).
Two charged bodies may attract or repel each other.
Like (similar) charges repel each other and unlike
(dissimilar) charges attract each other.

FAQs on Some Natural Phenomena Class 8 PPT

1. What are natural phenomena?
Ans. Natural phenomena are events or processes that occur naturally and are not caused by human activity. These can include weather patterns, geological events, and celestial events.
2. How do lightning and thunder occur?
Ans. Lightning is caused by the buildup of electrical charges in the atmosphere, and thunder is the sound produced by the rapid expansion of air following a lightning strike. When the electrical charges become large enough, they are discharged as lightning, which heats the air around it and causes it to expand rapidly, creating the sound of thunder.
3. What is an earthquake and what causes it?
Ans. An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. When these plates move against each other, they create pressure that builds up until it is released in the form of an earthquake.
4. What is a tsunami and how is it formed?
Ans. A tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption. When any of these events occur, a large amount of water is displaced, creating a wave that can travel across the ocean at high speeds and cause damage when it reaches land.
5. How can we protect ourselves from natural disasters?
Ans. There are several ways to protect ourselves from natural disasters, including staying informed about the weather and potential hazards in our area, preparing an emergency kit with food, water, and other essentials, having a plan for evacuation or sheltering in place, and following the instructions of emergency responders during a disaster. It's also important to be aware of any building codes or regulations in our area that can help mitigate damage from earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
