FAQs on PPT: The Last Leaf

1. Who is Johnsy in "The Last Leaf" and why does she give up on life?
Ans. Johnsy is a young artist living in New York who contracts pneumonia and becomes depressed, believing she will die when the last leaf falls from the ivy vine outside her window. Her friend Sue tries to keep her spirits up, but Johnsy's fixation on the falling leaves represents her loss of hope and will to recover, showing how negative thoughts can affect physical health and survival chances.
2. What is the significance of the last leaf in O. Henry's short story?
Ans. The last leaf symbolises hope, resilience, and the power of human determination in "The Last Leaf." It represents Johnsy's reason to live and her changing perspective on life. When Old Behrman paints a fake leaf to replace the real one, the last leaf becomes a metaphor for sacrifice and unconditional love, proving that one person's selfless act can save another's life and restore their will to fight.
3. How does Old Behrman's character develop throughout the narrative in this CBSE English chapter?
Ans. Old Behrman transforms from a struggling, seemingly unsuccessful artist into a heroic figure through his selfless actions in "The Last Leaf." Initially portrayed as grumpy and frustrated with his lack of recognition, he ultimately sacrifices his health and life by painting the fake leaf in freezing conditions. His character arc demonstrates that true greatness lies not in fame or recognition, but in acts of compassion and human connection.
4. What happens to Old Behrman after he paints the last leaf, and what does his fate teach us?
Ans. Old Behrman dies from pneumonia after painting the leaf in cold, wet conditions, sacrificing himself to save Johnsy's life in "The Last Leaf." His death reveals that genuine love and sacrifice often come at a personal cost. The story teaches that meaningful human relationships and altruistic actions matter more than individual survival, emphasising themes of devotion and the nobility of selflessness in literature.
5. Why does Johnsy recover from pneumonia despite her initial hopelessness in "The Last Leaf"?
Ans. Johnsy recovers after discovering the painted leaf, which restores her faith in life and gives her the psychological strength needed to fight pneumonia. The fake leaf's permanence contrasts with her belief in inevitable death, shifting her mindset from resignation to determination. Her physical recovery depends on mental healing, illustrating O. Henry's message that hope, will, and human support play crucial roles in overcoming life's darkest moments and illnesses.
