FAQs on PPT: The Beggar

1. Who is the beggar and what is his real identity in the story?
Ans. The beggar is initially presented as a poor man asking for alms, but he is actually Serguéi, a former government official and educated nobleman who has fallen into destitution. His disguise as a vagrant masks his past status and education, revealing the story's deeper commentary on social displacement and the consequences of gambling addiction that stripped him of his wealth and dignity.
2. What is the main conflict between the beggar and the gentleman in this CBSE Class 9 story?
Ans. The gentleman offers the beggar a wager: if the beggar can work for him for two years without complaint, he'll receive ten thousand roubles. The beggar accepts, but conflict arises from their opposing views on human nature, labour, and redemption. The gentleman believes wealth corrupts; the beggar seeks financial salvation, creating tension between principle and desperation throughout the narrative.
3. Why does the beggar accept the gentleman's two-year wager despite its hardship?
Ans. Desperate and homeless, the beggar accepts because ten thousand roubles represents his chance at financial recovery and social rehabilitation. He views the wager as an opportunity to escape poverty and reclaim respectability. His acceptance reflects his willingness to endure suffering for potential redemption, though he underestimates the psychological and physical toll of the agreement.
4. What does the beggar's transformation during the two years reveal about the story's theme?
Ans. The beggar's gradual transformation-from defiant and resentful to disciplined and introspective-reveals that sustained labour and purpose can reshape character and perspective. His journey demonstrates the redemptive power of work and self-discipline. The story suggests that external circumstances and personal effort, rather than inherited wealth, determine true human worth and moral growth.
5. How does the ending of The Beggar challenge the gentleman's original philosophy about money and morality?
Ans. The beggar's decision to reject the ten thousand roubles at the story's conclusion contradicts the gentleman's belief that wealth inevitably corrupts. By choosing self-respect and inner transformation over monetary reward, the beggar proves that moral growth transcends financial gain. The ending suggests that human dignity and spiritual development matter more than material possession, fundamentally undermining the gentleman's cynical worldview.
