Emergence of New Dynasties (7th to 12th centuries)
In the 7th century, various regions of the subcontinent had
powerful landlords and warrior chiefs who were recognized as
subordinates or "samantas" by the reigning kings.
These samantas were required to offer gifts to their kings, attend
their courts, and provide military support.

themselves as "maha-samanta" or
"maha-mandaleshvara," even asserting
independence from their overlords.
An example is the Rashtrakutas in the
Deccan, who were initially subordinates
to the Chalukyas of Karnataka.
