Teacher’s Note: Get students to show halves with paper folding in
different ways. Please refer to the fraction as one half and not as 1
out of 2.
Here are some mangoes. Share them
equally between the two children.
Take a rectangular sheet of paper and
fold it in half. Find all the different ways
to make a half.
Take a square piece of paper and fold
it in half. Find all the different ways to
make a half.
There was an old man with two sons Amit and Bala. He
gave a mango tree, a solar lamp and a woollen blanket to
them. He asked them to share these things among
themselves. Amit was a cunning man. He told his brother
‘Let us share the objects equally. I will keep the fruits, you
keep the tree. I will keep the lamp during the night, you can
keep it during the day. I will keep the blanket for half the
year during winter. You can keep it for half the year during
summer.’ Bala agreed.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions: Fair Share

1. How do I divide things equally between people in fair share problems?
Ans. Fair share means dividing something into equal parts so everyone gets the same amount. To find each person's fair share, count the total items and divide by the number of people. For example, if 12 sweets are shared among 3 children, each child gets 4 sweets. This division ensures fairness and equal distribution in daily situations like sharing snacks or toys.
2. What's the difference between equal sharing and fair share in Class 3 maths?
Ans. Equal sharing and fair share are closely related concepts where items are divided so each person receives identical portions. Equal sharing focuses on the division process itself, while fair share emphasises the fairness and equity of distribution. Both use division to ensure no one gets more than others, teaching children about equality and justice in sharing scenarios.
3. How do you solve fair share word problems step by step?
Ans. To solve fair share word problems, first identify the total quantity and number of recipients. Next, divide the total by the number of people using division. Finally, verify your answer by multiplying back: if 15 apples divided among 5 students equals 3 apples each, then 3 × 5 = 15. This method confirms accurate fair distribution in CBSE Class 3 mathematics.
4. Can fair share division result in leftover items, and what do we do with remainders?
Ans. Yes, fair share division sometimes leaves remainders when items cannot divide evenly. For instance, 13 cookies among 4 children gives 3 cookies each with 1 leftover. Students can distribute remainders equally (giving fractions), keep extras separate, or round up depending on context. Understanding remainders develops practical problem-solving skills beyond simple whole-number division.
5. What real-life situations use fair share division that I should know for exams?
Ans. Fair share appears in everyday scenarios: dividing lunch among classmates, sharing pocket money equally, distributing sports equipment, or portioning ingredients in cooking. Recognising these practical applications helps Class 3 students understand division's purpose beyond abstract maths. NCERT questions often test this real-world thinking, making fair share concepts essential for both understanding and exam success.
