ISOMERISM
• What is isomerism:-
The compounds which have the some
molecular formula but differ from each
other in physical or chemical properties are
called isomer and the phenomenon is
called isomerism.
There are two main type of isomerism
• Structural isomerism
• Stereo isomerism

ISOMERISM
• What is isomerism:-
The compounds which have the some
molecular formula but differ from each
other in physical or chemical properties are
called isomer and the phenomenon is
called isomerism.
There are two main type of isomerism
• Structural isomerism
• Stereo isomerism
• 1. Structural Isomerism:- When the isomerism
is due to difference in the arrangement of atoms
within the molecules without any reference to
space is called structural isomerism.
• (a) Chain isomerism: Structural isomerism is of
five type chain isomer have the same molecular
formula but differ in the order in which the
carbon atoms are bonded to each other.
• Example : n-Butane and isobutane

same molecular formula but differ in the position
of a functional group on the carbon chain.
• Example : 1-Bromobutene and 2- Bromobutane

FAQs on PPT: Isomerism - Chemistry for JEE Main & Advanced

1. What is isomerism in chemistry?
Ans. Isomerism in chemistry refers to the phenomenon where two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different structural arrangements, leading to distinct chemical and physical properties.
2. What are the two main types of isomerism?
Ans. The two main types of isomerism are structural isomerism, where compounds have different structural arrangements, and stereoisomerism, where compounds have the same connectivity but differ in spatial arrangement.
3. Can you provide an example of structural isomerism?
Ans. An example of structural isomerism is the compounds ethanol and dimethyl ether, both having the molecular formula C2H6O but differing in their structural arrangement.
4. What is the difference between geometric isomerism and optical isomerism?
Ans. Geometric isomerism arises due to restricted rotation about a bond, leading to cis-trans isomerism, while optical isomerism occurs when compounds have a chiral center, resulting in enantiomers that are non-superimposable mirror images.
5. How does isomerism impact the properties of compounds?
Ans. Isomerism can significantly influence the chemical and physical properties of compounds, such as boiling point, melting point, solubility, and reactivity, due to the differences in their structural or spatial arrangements.
