Pinnacle Day: 59th Pipe and Cistern
 Pipe and Cistern
Pipes and Cisterns are just an
application of Time and Work. Concept
wise, it is one and the same. In the above
 proportionality, E?ciency is replaced by
Rate of ?lling. The equation in this case
 becomes
 Rate of ?lling ?

 ???????? ??????????
The concept of the percentage of work
done can be used to solve most of the
 related questions.
A few basic points one needs to know to
use the percentage concept are: When it
is said that someone has done a work, it
means he has done 100 % of the work.
Hence, if A ?nishes work in 4 days, it
means- in 4 days he will do 100% of the
work. Hence, in one day he ?nishes 25%
(100/4) of the work. Similarly, in 3 days
he ?nishes 75 % of the work.
The complete work can also be
considered as 1 unit. Then if A takes 4
days to ?nish a work, it means he can
?nish 1/4th of the work in 1 day.

Here are some basic questions to
illustrate time and work shortcut tricks.
E?ciency and Time taken are inversely
proportional implies that If A is twice as
good as B then A will take half the Time
 that B will take.
If the e?ciencies are in the ratio m : n
then Time taken will be in the ratio, n : m.
i.e. If A is thrice as good as B then A will
 take (1/3)rd of the Time.
This can be proved with the help of the
 following proportionality
 E?ciency ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
 MDH formula
MDH formula is used to compare the
works of the same nature done at two
 different times using different
manpower. The MDH formula can be
 represented as
Where, M = denotes the number of
 men/women, D = denotes the number of
days, H = denotes the number of hours in
 a day, E = denotes the e?ciency of 1
man, and W = denotes part of work done
 Variety Questions
Q.1. Two pipes can ?ll a cistern in 12
hours and 16 hours, respectively. The
pipes are opened simultaneously and it is
found that due to leakage at the bottom,
it takes 90 minutes more to ?ll the
cistern. How much time will the leakage
take to empty the completely ?lled tank ?

Pinnacle Day: 59th Pipe and Cistern
 Pipe and Cistern
Pipes and Cisterns are just an
application of Time and Work. Concept
wise, it is one and the same. In the above
 proportionality, E?ciency is replaced by
Rate of ?lling. The equation in this case
 becomes
 Rate of ?lling ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
The concept of the percentage of work
done can be used to solve most of the
 related questions.
A few basic points one needs to know to
use the percentage concept are: When it
is said that someone has done a work, it
means he has done 100 % of the work.
Hence, if A ?nishes work in 4 days, it
means- in 4 days he will do 100% of the
work. Hence, in one day he ?nishes 25%
(100/4) of the work. Similarly, in 3 days
he ?nishes 75 % of the work.
The complete work can also be
considered as 1 unit. Then if A takes 4
days to ?nish a work, it means he can
?nish 1/4th of the work in 1 day.
 Illustrations:
Here are some basic questions to
illustrate time and work shortcut tricks.
E?ciency and Time taken are inversely
proportional implies that If A is twice as
good as B then A will take half the Time
 that B will take.
If the e?ciencies are in the ratio m : n
then Time taken will be in the ratio, n : m.
i.e. If A is thrice as good as B then A will
 take (1/3)rd of the Time.
This can be proved with the help of the
 following proportionality
 E?ciency ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
 MDH formula
MDH formula is used to compare the
works of the same nature done at two
 different times using different
manpower. The MDH formula can be
 represented as
Where, M = denotes the number of
 men/women, D = denotes the number of
days, H = denotes the number of hours in
 a day, E = denotes the e?ciency of 1
man, and W = denotes part of work done

Pinnacle Day: 59th Pipe and Cistern
 Pipe and Cistern
Pipes and Cisterns are just an
application of Time and Work. Concept
wise, it is one and the same. In the above
 proportionality, E?ciency is replaced by
Rate of ?lling. The equation in this case
 becomes
 Rate of ?lling ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
The concept of the percentage of work
done can be used to solve most of the
 related questions.
A few basic points one needs to know to
use the percentage concept are: When it
is said that someone has done a work, it
means he has done 100 % of the work.
Hence, if A ?nishes work in 4 days, it
means- in 4 days he will do 100% of the
work. Hence, in one day he ?nishes 25%
(100/4) of the work. Similarly, in 3 days
he ?nishes 75 % of the work.
The complete work can also be
considered as 1 unit. Then if A takes 4
days to ?nish a work, it means he can
?nish 1/4th of the work in 1 day.
 Illustrations:
Here are some basic questions to
illustrate time and work shortcut tricks.
E?ciency and Time taken are inversely
proportional implies that If A is twice as
good as B then A will take half the Time
 that B will take.
If the e?ciencies are in the ratio m : n
then Time taken will be in the ratio, n : m.
i.e. If A is thrice as good as B then A will
 take (1/3)rd of the Time.
This can be proved with the help of the
 following proportionality
 E?ciency ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
 MDH formula
MDH formula is used to compare the
works of the same nature done at two
 different times using different
manpower. The MDH formula can be
 represented as
Where, M = denotes the number of
 men/women, D = denotes the number of
days, H = denotes the number of hours in
 a day, E = denotes the e?ciency of 1
man, and W = denotes part of work done

Pinnacle Day: 59th Pipe and Cistern
 Pipe and Cistern
Pipes and Cisterns are just an
application of Time and Work. Concept
wise, it is one and the same. In the above
 proportionality, E?ciency is replaced by
Rate of ?lling. The equation in this case
 becomes
 Rate of ?lling ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
The concept of the percentage of work
done can be used to solve most of the
 related questions.
A few basic points one needs to know to
use the percentage concept are: When it
is said that someone has done a work, it
means he has done 100 % of the work.
Hence, if A ?nishes work in 4 days, it
means- in 4 days he will do 100% of the
work. Hence, in one day he ?nishes 25%
(100/4) of the work. Similarly, in 3 days
he ?nishes 75 % of the work.
The complete work can also be
considered as 1 unit. Then if A takes 4
days to ?nish a work, it means he can
?nish 1/4th of the work in 1 day.
 Illustrations:
Here are some basic questions to
illustrate time and work shortcut tricks.
E?ciency and Time taken are inversely
proportional implies that If A is twice as
good as B then A will take half the Time
 that B will take.
If the e?ciencies are in the ratio m : n
then Time taken will be in the ratio, n : m.
i.e. If A is thrice as good as B then A will
 take (1/3)rd of the Time.
This can be proved with the help of the
 following proportionality
 E?ciency ?
    1
 ???????? ??????????
 MDH formula
MDH formula is used to compare the
works of the same nature done at two
 different times using different
manpower. The MDH formula can be
 represented as
Where, M = denotes the number of
 men/women, D = denotes the number of
days, H = denotes the number of hours in
 a day, E = denotes the e?ciency of 1
man, and W = denotes part of work done
 Variety Questions
Q.1. Two pipes can ?ll a cistern in 12
hours and 16 hours, respectively. The
pipes are opened simultaneously and it is

it takes 90 minutes more to ?ll the
cistern. How much time will the leakage

FAQs on SSC CGL Previous Year Questions (2023-18): Pipe and Cistern - SSC CGL Mathematics Previous Year Paper (Topic-wise)

1. What are the basic concepts of Pipe and Cistern problems in SSC CGL?
Ans.Pipe and Cistern problems in SSC CGL revolve around the rates of filling and emptying tanks or cisterns using multiple pipes. Key concepts include understanding the rates at which pipes fill or drain water, calculating the time taken to fill or empty a tank, and applying the formula: Time = Volume / Rate.
2. How to calculate the time taken to fill a tank with multiple pipes?
Ans.To calculate the time taken to fill a tank with multiple pipes, first determine the rate at which each pipe fills the tank (volume per hour). Then, add the rates of the pipes together to find the combined rate. Finally, use the formula: Time = Total Volume / Combined Rate.
3. What is the formula for solving Pipe and Cistern questions in SSC exams?
Ans.The formula for Pipe and Cistern problems typically involves the relationship: Time = Volume / Rate. For two or more pipes, the combined rate is the sum of the individual rates of the pipes. It's also important to convert all units to be consistent when calculating.
4. Can you provide an example of a Pipe and Cistern problem from previous SSC CGL exams?
Ans.An example problem is: "Pipe A can fill a tank in 6 hours, while Pipe B can fill it in 4 hours. If both pipes are opened together, how long will it take to fill the tank?" The solution involves calculating the combined rate and then finding the time taken.
5. What common mistakes should be avoided in Pipe and Cistern problems?
Ans.Common mistakes include not converting units correctly, misunderstanding the rates of filling vs. emptying, and neglecting to account for the time each pipe is open. It’s crucial to carefully read the problem and set up the equations properly to avoid errors.
