The Legislature (Vidhan Sabha)
At the time of the creation of the State there were 30 Members in the Interim
Legislative Assembly out of which 21 Members were from Uttar Pradesh
Vidhan Sabha and 8 Members from Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad. The first
General Elections for 70 seats of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha were held in
February, 2002. One Member was nominated from the Anglo-Indian
Community. Hence the total number of Members of Legislative Assembly
became 71. 2 seats are reserved for STs while 13 are reserved for SCs.
Unless dissolved earlier, the normal duration of Legislative Assembly is 5
years. At present Shri Prem Chand Agarwal is the Speaker of the Assembly
and Shri Raghunath Singh Chauhan is the Deputy Speaker of the Uttarakhand
Assembly.
SPEAKERS’ RESEARCH INITIATIVE
SRA started in 2015 is an innovative idea of Vidhan Sabha Speaker. It is
aimed at initiating an intellectual dialogue between members of assembly,
subject specialists, intellectuals and common public, to assist members in
raising, discussing and making qualitatively informed decisions inside the
house. Along with this the intiative is aimed at organizing workshops,
conferences, discussions and debates on issues related to public. Various
activities undertaken in this initiative includes, discussion on Ganga river
with reference to river systems of Uttarakhand in 2017, Tobacco
Consumption: drawbacks and prohibition in May 2017, Discussion on
Sustainable Development Goals in the House in March 2018, World Tobacco
Prohibition Day on 31 may 2018 and Intermational Yoga Day on 21 June
2018.

The initiative was started in 2008 to recognize outstanding efforts of
members of legislative assembly of Uttarakhand, in performing their duties
including participation in debates, discussions and raising issues and
questions of Public importance.

Committes on Dialects- In August 2020, the Speaker announced that the
Vidhan Sabha will have committees of Kumauni, Garhwali and Jaunsari
dialects, to protect, preserve and promote these dialects.
