What is a Fraction?
A fraction is a number that represents part of a
whole.
The whole can be a single object (like a cake) or a
group of objects (like a set of marbles).
Parts of a Fraction:
Numerator: The top number, which indicates
how many parts are taken.
Denominator: The bottom number, which
indicates the total number of equal parts in the
whole.

Example:
Consider a figure that is divided into 4
equal parts.
What is a Fraction?
If 3 parts are shaded, then the fraction
representing the shaded portion is 3/4.
Numerator: 3 (number of shaded
parts)
Denominator: 4 (total number of
parts)
