Note for Teachers: Help the learners in naming the four cardinal directions. Ask the
children to figure out the directions by facing the rising sun. Also, discuss with them
other ways of finding directions, such as using a compass. To spark curiosity, you
may talk about or encourage the learners to find out how birds find their directions
during migration.

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Maps and Locations

1. What are the different types of maps used in geography?
Ans. In geography, the main types of maps include political maps, physical maps, thematic maps, and topographic maps. Political maps show boundaries, cities, and significant infrastructure. Physical maps depict natural features like mountains, rivers, and lakes. Thematic maps focus on specific themes or data, such as climate or population density. Topographic maps provide detailed information about the terrain, including elevation and landforms.
2. How do maps help us understand our surroundings?
Ans. Maps are essential tools for understanding our surroundings as they provide a visual representation of geographical areas. They help in identifying locations, understanding distances between places, and recognizing the layout of different regions. Maps can also convey information about various features such as roads, landmarks, and natural resources, which aids in navigation and planning.
3. What is the importance of scale on a map?
Ans. The scale of a map is crucial as it indicates the relationship between distances on the map and actual distances on the ground. It helps users to accurately measure distances and understand the size of geographical features. A map with a larger scale shows more detail over a smaller area, while a smaller scale map covers a larger area with less detail.
4. What are symbols and keys in maps, and why are they important?
Ans. Symbols and keys (or legends) on maps are essential for interpreting the information presented. Symbols represent different features, such as roads, rivers, or parks, while the key explains what each symbol means. This allows users to easily understand and navigate the map without confusion, making it a vital component for effective map reading.
5. How can we use maps to study history?
Ans. Maps are valuable tools for studying history as they provide insights into how geographical boundaries, trade routes, and settlement patterns have changed over time. Historical maps can reveal the locations of significant events, migration patterns, and territorial changes. By analyzing maps from different periods, students can better understand the relationship between geography and historical developments.
