? Listen carefully to the voices of your friends in the
classroom. Are they all unique, or do some sound
similar? Probably not! You will hear a variety
of tones — sharp
and clear, rich and
deep, and soft and
gentle. Just like our
appearances, each
voice is unique and
distinct. No two
people look exactly
alike and similarly,
no two voices
sound exactly the
same.
? Have you ever wondered about the difference
between a male and a female voice? We often
assume that male voices are low-pitched and
female voices are high-pitched. However, this
is not always true. You will get a fair idea of
different types of voices when you listen to the
voices of your classmates.

Roshanara Begum, who was born in Kolkata.
? Find and listen to a performance by a female

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: The Music of the People

1. What is the significance of folk music in the cultural heritage of different regions?
Ans.Folk music plays a crucial role in the cultural heritage of various regions as it reflects the traditions, values, and stories of the people. It often serves as a means of preserving history and identity, allowing communities to express their emotions, celebrate festivals, and convey social messages. Each region has its unique style, instruments, and themes, contributing to the rich tapestry of global music.
2. How does folk music differ from classical music?
Ans.Folk music and classical music differ primarily in their origins, structure, and purpose. Folk music is typically community-based, informal, and passed down through generations, often using simple melodies and repetitive structures. In contrast, classical music is formal, often composed by trained musicians, and adheres to specific rules and complex structures. While folk music reflects everyday life and local culture, classical music often explores broader themes and emotions.
3. What instruments are commonly used in folk music around the world?
Ans.Common instruments used in folk music vary by region but often include string instruments like the guitar, violin, and banjo, percussion instruments like drums and tambourines, and wind instruments such as flutes and harmonicas. Each instrument adds a distinct sound that is characteristic of the specific culture, contributing to the overall flavor and style of the folk music from that area.
4. How do themes in folk music reflect societal changes?
Ans.Themes in folk music often mirror societal changes, such as migration, war, love, and economic shifts. As communities evolve, their music adapts to reflect new experiences and challenges. For example, songs may address issues of social justice, environmental concerns, or the impact of technology on daily life, providing insight into the collective consciousness and struggles of the people.
5. Why is it important to preserve folk music traditions?
Ans.Preserving folk music traditions is vital for maintaining cultural diversity and heritage. It allows future generations to connect with their roots, understand their history, and appreciate the creativity of their ancestors. Additionally, folk music can foster a sense of community and belonging, encouraging collaboration and shared experiences among people, regardless of their backgrounds.
