A Sad Accident
When Louis was just 3 years 
old, he was playing near his 
dad's workshop in France.
Louis picked up a sharp tool 
and hurt his eye badly.
Soon, Louis couldn't see 
anymore. 
Learning a New Way
At age 10, Louis went to a 
special school in Paris for 
children who couldn't see.
 He learned to read by touching 
letters made from wood and 
cloth. 
But it was very hard!
A Clever Idea
A soldier invented dots and 
dashes for reading in the dark.
As a teenager, Louis worked 
hard and created the Braille 
alphabet426 letters made of 
raised dots you can feel with 
your fingers!
Helping Everyone
Louis's invention helped blind 
people read books, write 
stories, and learn! 
Braille books are thicker 
because the dots need space, 
but they opened up a whole 
new world.

What We Learn
Louis shows us that even when something really hard happens, we can 
still help others and make the world better.
With hard work and a kind heart, you can do amazing things too!
