MODULE 6 | Mental Health & Mindfulness for Students
Guided Practice Activities
Healthy Communication and Relationships
Complete the activities below to apply and deepen your learning from this module.
Activity 1: Communication Styles Role Play
Type: Drama / Pair Activity · Estimated Time: 25 minutes
What to do:
1. In pairs, read the following scenario: 'Your friend borrowed your notes and lost them the day
before your exam.'
2. Perform this scenario 3 times using 3 different communication styles:
3. Round 1: PASSIVE — one person avoids conflict and says nothing meaningful.
4. Round 2: AGGRESSIVE — one person reacts with blame, raised voice, and criticism.
5. Round 3: ASSERTIVE — one person clearly states their feelings and needs without attacking
the other.
6. After all 3 rounds, discuss as a pair: Which style felt best? Which was most effective?
7. Write 3 key features of assertive communication based on what you observed.
Reflection Questions:
• Which communication style do you tend to default to in real life? Why?
• What is one thing you can say differently next time you are in a conflict?
? Teacher Tip: Assertive communication respects both your needs and the other person's
— it is the foundation of healthy relationships.

Activity 2: Active Listening Practice
Type: Pair Activity · Estimated Time: 15 minutes
What to do:
8. Sit facing a partner. Decide who is the Speaker and who is the Listener.
9. The Speaker talks for 2 minutes about something that has been on their mind recently — it can
be anything (not necessarily personal).
10. The Listener must: maintain eye contact, not interrupt, nod or show they are engaged, and not
look at their phone.
11. After 2 minutes, the Listener paraphrases what they heard: 'What I heard you say was...'
12. The Speaker confirms or clarifies.
13. Swap roles and repeat.

Reflection Questions:
• How did it feel to be truly listened to?
• Which active listening skill is most challenging for you personally?
? Teacher Tip: Most people listen to reply rather than to understand. Active listening is a
