1. What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
Ans. Mean, median, and mode are all measures of central tendency in statistics. The mean is calculated by adding up all the values in a data set and then dividing by the number of values. The median is the middle value in a data set when the values are arranged in ascending or descending order. The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set.
2. How do you calculate the mean?
Ans. To calculate the mean, you add up all the values in a data set and then divide the sum by the number of values. For example, if you have the data set {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}, you would add up all the numbers (2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30) and then divide by the number of values (30 ÷ 5 = 6). Therefore, the mean of this data set is 6.
3. How do you find the median?
Ans. To find the median, you first arrange the values in a data set in ascending or descending order. If the number of values is odd, the median is the middle value. If the number of values is even, the median is the average of the two middle values. For example, if you have the data set {3, 5, 8, 9, 12}, the median is 8. But if you have the data set {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}, the median would be (6 + 8) ÷ 2, which is 7.
4. How do you identify the mode?
Ans. To identify the mode, you look for the value that appears most frequently in a data set. It is possible to have multiple modes in a data set, or no mode at all if no value repeats. For example, in the data set {2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6}, the mode is 5 because it appears three times, which is more than any other value.
5. When would you use mean, median, or mode?
Ans. The choice of using mean, median, or mode depends on the nature of the data and the purpose of the analysis. The mean is commonly used when the data is numerical and normally distributed, as it takes all values into account. The median is preferred when there are outliers or when the data is not normally distributed, as it is not affected by extreme values. The mode is useful for categorical or discrete data, as it shows the most common value or category.
