Super Senses 1 1 1 1 1
As you walked softly past a
sleeping dog, its ears shot up
at once.
You were eating in the
playground, an eagle flew
down and took away your
roti.
Has this ever
happened to you?
1. Super Senses
You dropped something sweet on
the ground and within minutes
many ants collected around it.
Animals also have different senses. They can see, hear,
taste, smell and feel. Some animals can see their prey from
far away. Some can hear even the faintest sound. Some
animals can find their friends by their smell. The animal
world is full of examples of amazing senses!

2 Looking Around
How did the ant recognise a friend?
An ant was going along on the ground. It saw a group
of ants coming from the other side. The first ant quickly
came back to its hole. The ant guarding the hole
recognised it and let it in.
Think and Tell
w How did the ant know that the other ants
were not from its group?
w How did the guard ant recognise this ant?
Try this and write
Drop some sugar, jaggery or anything sweet on the ground.
Wait until the ants come there.
w How long did it take for the ants to come?
w Did one ant come first or a group of ants came together?
w What did the ants do with the food?
w Where do they go from there?
w Do they move in a line?
Teacher’s Note : Children of this age are interested in animals. Encourage them
to share their experiences. Children should be supported to carry out observation
activities which require patience.

Super Senses 3
w Now can you guess why the ants behaved
like that when you blocked their path?
Some male insects can recognise their
females by their smell.
w Have you ever been troubled by mosquitoes?
Just think, how do they know where
you are?
Mosquitoes can find you by the smell of your
body. They also find you by the smell of the
sole of your feet and the heat of your body.
I am a silk worm. I
can find my female
worm from many
kilometres away by
her smell.
Many years ago a scientist did many experiments like this.
He found out that as the ants move, they leave a smell on the
ground. The other ants follow the smell to find the way.
Now carefully, without harming the ants, block their path
for a while with a pencil.
w Now observe, how do the ants move?
w Have you seen a dog sniffing here
and there? What do you think it is
trying to smell?
Dogs mark out their own area on
the road. They can make out if another
dog has come into their area by the
smell of its urine or potty (latrine).

Teacher’s Note : Sushila’s example illustrates a common situation in families.
Discuss with children how we often find a smell ‘bad’ when we think it is
from something dirty. If we analyse it, we may not be so offended by certain
smells.
Why so?
Today Rajni had to go out for some
important work. She had to leave her six-
month old son Deepak with her sister
Sushila. Sushila also has a baby of
the same age. It was funny that both
the babies did potty at the same
time. She happily cleaned her
daughter but when she was cleaning
her sister’s son Deepak, she covered
her nose with her dupatta (scarf).
Discuss
w Do the clothes of any of your family members smell?
whose?
w Did you ever come across any smell in a crowded place
such as a fair, bus, train etc.
Think and discuss
w Sushila covered her nose when she cleaned Deepak’s
nappy, but not when she cleaned her daughter. Why do
you think she did this?
w How do you feel when you walk near a heap of garbage?
Think of the children who spend the whole day picking
things from such garbage.
w Is a smell ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for everyone in the same way?
Or does it depend on how each one feels about it?

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Super Senses

1. What are super senses and which animals have them?
Ans. Super senses are extraordinary sensory abilities that help certain animals survive and navigate their environments far better than humans. Animals like dogs possess incredible smell, bats use echolocation to detect objects in darkness, and snakes sense heat through special organs. These heightened senses allow creatures to hunt, find food, and avoid danger in ways humans cannot replicate, making them perfectly adapted to their habitats.
2. How does echolocation work and which animals use it?
Ans. Echolocation is a biological sonar system where animals emit sounds and listen to returning echoes to locate objects and navigate. Bats and dolphins are master echolocators, producing high-frequency sound waves that bounce off obstacles, prey, and environmental features. By analysing the returning echoes, these animals create detailed mental maps of their surroundings, allowing them to hunt and move in complete darkness with remarkable precision and accuracy.
3. Why can some animals see in the dark better than humans?
Ans. Nocturnal animals like cats and owls possess superior night vision because their eyes contain more rod cells and a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. This special membrane reflects light back through the retina, amplifying available light and enabling these animals to see clearly in dim conditions. Humans rely heavily on cone cells for colour vision but lack this adaptation, making us far less capable of seeing in low-light environments compared to night-hunting creatures.
4. What makes a dog's sense of smell so powerful compared to humans?
Ans. Dogs possess approximately 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to humans' mere 6 million, making their smell capability roughly 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger. This extraordinary olfactory ability allows dogs to detect diseases, track missing people, and identify substances at microscopic concentrations. A dog's brain dedicates significantly more processing power to smell data, enabling them to distinguish individual scents within complex odour mixtures that humans cannot separate.
5. How do different animals use their super senses to find food and survive?
Ans. Animals deploy specialised sensory abilities as survival strategies tailored to their ecological niches. Snakes use heat-sensing pits to hunt warm-blooded prey in darkness, eagles spot movement from miles away, and sharks detect electrical fields generated by other organisms in water. These remarkable adaptations-whether thermal detection, acute vision, or electroreception-demonstrate how super senses directly connect to an animal's hunting success, food acquisition, and overall survival in competitive natural environments.
