1. What is sound and how is it produced?
Ans. Sound is a form of energy that is produced when an object vibrates. When an object vibrates, it creates sound waves that travel through the air or other mediums, such as water or solids. These sound waves then reach our ears, allowing us to hear the sound.
2. How does sound travel through different mediums?
Ans. Sound travels through different mediums by vibrating the particles present in the medium. In solids, sound travels fastest because the particles are closely packed and can easily pass on the vibrations. In liquids, sound travels slower as the particles are loosely packed. In gases, sound travels slowest as the particles are far apart and it requires more time for the vibrations to reach the ear.
3. What is the difference between pitch and loudness of sound?
Ans. Pitch refers to the highness or lowness of a sound. It is determined by the frequency of the sound waves. Higher frequency waves produce higher-pitched sounds, while lower frequency waves produce lower-pitched sounds. Loudness, on the other hand, refers to the intensity or volume of a sound. It is determined by the amplitude of the sound waves. Greater amplitude results in a louder sound, while smaller amplitude results in a softer sound.
4. How does sound get reflected and why do we hear echoes?
Ans. Sound gets reflected when it strikes a surface and bounces back. This phenomenon is called an echo. We hear echoes when the reflected sound waves reach our ears after bouncing off a surface. The time interval between the original sound and the echo depends on the distance between the source of the sound and the reflecting surface. The further the distance, the longer the time interval between the original sound and the echo.
5. How does sound travel in space?
Ans. Sound cannot travel in space because space is a vacuum, meaning it is devoid of any medium for sound waves to travel through. Sound waves require a medium such as air, water, or solids to propagate. In the absence of a medium, there are no particles for the sound waves to vibrate and transmit the sound. Therefore, sound cannot be heard in space.
