In the following question, a Statement of Assertion (A) is given followed by a corresponding Reason (R) just below it. Read the Statements carefully and mark the correct answer-
Assertion(A): Equimolar mixture HCl and ZnCl2 is known as Lucas reagent.
Reason(R): Lucas reagent can be used to distinguish between methanol and ethanol.
  • a)
Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
  • b)
Both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
  • c)
Assertion is true but Reason is false.
  • d)
Assertion is false but Reason is true.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Assertion and Reasoning

Equimolar mixture HCl and ZnCl2 is known as Lucas reagent.

Lucas reagent can be used to distinguish between methanol and ethanol.

The correct answer is option C, Assertion is true but Reason is false.

Explanation:

Lucas reagent is a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) and anhydrous zinc chloride (ZnCl2). It is used as a reagent to test the relative reactivity of different alcohols towards HCl. The test is carried out by taking a small amount of the alcohol to be tested and adding a few drops of Lucas reagent to it. The mixture is then heated gently. If the alcohol is a primary or secondary alcohol, it will react with the Lucas reagent to give a cloudy solution of the corresponding alkyl chloride. Tertiary alcohols, on the other hand, do not react with Lucas reagent.

Therefore, the Assertion that an equimolar mixture of HCl and ZnCl2 is known as Lucas reagent is true.

However, the Reason that Lucas reagent can be used to distinguish between methanol and ethanol is false. Lucas reagent cannot be used to distinguish between methanol and ethanol because both these alcohols are primary alcohols and react with Lucas reagent to give the corresponding alkyl chloride.

In conclusion, Assertion is true but Reason is false.

Answer is Option (C) as assertion is true because mixture of HCl and ZnCl2 is Lucas reagent but the reason is false because this reagent is used for the distinction of 1degree,2degree and 3degree alchols and in the question it is methanol and ethanol both of them are 1degree alcohols,so reason is false.
