Phosphodiester bond joins adjacent nucleotides

A nucleotide is the building block of nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA. A nucleotide consists of three parts: a nitrogenous base, a sugar molecule, and a phosphate group. Adjacent nucleotides are joined together by a phosphodiester bond.

Phosphodiester bond formation

Phosphodiester bond formation occurs during the process of DNA replication and RNA transcription. The phosphate group of one nucleotide reacts with the hydroxyl group (-OH) of the sugar molecule of another nucleotide, releasing a molecule of water. This reaction forms a covalent bond between the phosphate group and the sugar molecule, and the two nucleotides are joined together. This process repeats to form a polynucleotide chain.

Function of phosphodiester bonds

Phosphodiester bonds are important for the stability and structure of nucleic acids. They provide a backbone for the polynucleotide chain, which is essential for the double-helix structure of DNA and the single-stranded structure of RNA. The phosphate groups also carry a negative charge, which contributes to the overall negative charge of DNA and RNA molecules.
