Porifera

Porifera is a phylum of aquatic animals that includes sponges. The body of poriferans is characterized by a meshwork of cells and internal cavities lined with food filtering flagellated cells.

Body Structure

Poriferans have a unique body structure that is unlike any other animal. They are asymmetrical and have a simple body plan. Their body is composed of a network of cells that form a porous structure. The pores are openings that allow water to flow into the sponge, and the water is then filtered through the sponge's internal cavities.

Internal Cavities

The internal cavities of poriferans are lined with flagellated cells called choanocytes. These cells create a current that pulls water through the sponge and traps food particles. The food particles are then engulfed by the choanocytes and digested. The waste is then expelled out of the sponge through an opening called the osculum.

Indirect Development

Poriferans have an indirect development cycle. The larvae of poriferans are free-swimming and can move around until they find a suitable spot to settle down. Once they settle down, they attach themselves to a surface and start growing into an adult sponge.

In conclusion, the characteristics of phylum Porifera are a body having a meshwork of cells, internal cavities lined with food filtering flagellated cells, and indirect development.
