The CORRECT order of melting points of group 15 trifluorides is
  • a)
    PF3 < AsF3 < SbF3 < BiF3
  • b)
    BiF3 < SbF3 < PF3 < AsF3
  • c)
    PF3 < SbF3 < AsF3 < BiF3
  • d)
    BiF3 < AsF3 < SbF3 < PF3
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Smaller the size of the cation, higher will be its' covalent character. And with the increase in covalent character, melting point decreases gradually.
Now the size of the cations follows this order: P<As<Sb<Bi. P being the smallest in size it has greater polarizing ability hence PF3 will have the most covalent character, with increase in size of the central atom from top to bottom covalent character of the fluorides decreases, ionic character increases, therefore melting point also increases maintaining the same order.
