The military coup in Pakistan in 1999 was led by Pervez Musharraf.

Background:
• In 1999, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, dismissed the Chief of Army Staff, General Pervez Musharraf, while he was on an official visit to Sri Lanka.
• This move was seen as a power grab by Nawaz Sharif and created a rift between the Prime Minister and the military.

The Coup:
• On October 12, 1999, General Musharraf led a military coup and overthrew the government of Nawaz Sharif.
• Musharraf declared a state of emergency and suspended the constitution.
• He assumed the role of Chief Executive of Pakistan and later became the President of Pakistan.

Aftermath:
• Musharraf's coup was widely criticized by the international community and led to Pakistan's suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations.
• The United States initially imposed economic sanctions on Pakistan but later lifted them after Musharraf agreed to support the US in the War on Terror.
• Musharraf's rule was marked by authoritarian measures and curbs on civil liberties.
