The five kingdom classification was proposed by R. H. Whittaker in 1969. Whittaker's five kingdoms are Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. The five criteria used by Whittaker for delimiting the different kingdoms are-
i) Complexity of cell structure
ii) Complexity of body structure or structural organisation
iii) Mode of nutrition
iv) Presence or absence of sexual reproduction
v) Phylogenetic relationships.
As the viruses are on the broad line of living and nonliving, they have been left out.
