Inductance is a fundamental property of an electrical circuit that describes the ability of a component to store energy in a magnetic field. It is measured in units called henries (H). There are different methods and devices used for measuring inductance, and one of the commonly used devices is the Maxwell bridge.

Maxwell Bridge:
The Maxwell bridge is a type of bridge circuit that is specifically designed for measuring the inductance of a component. It was invented by James Clerk Maxwell, a Scottish physicist and mathematician.

Components of Maxwell Bridge:
The Maxwell bridge consists of the following components:

1. Variable resistor (R1): This resistor is used to balance the bridge circuit.

2. Inductance (L): The component whose inductance is to be measured is connected in series with the variable resistor.

3. Non-inductive resistor (R2): This resistor is connected in parallel with the inductance and variable resistor.

4. Capacitor (C): A known capacitor is connected in series with a non-inductive resistor (R3).

Working Principle:
The Maxwell bridge operates on the principle of balancing the bridge circuit to determine the unknown inductance. The bridge is balanced when the voltage across the galvanometer (G) is zero.

The balance condition for the Maxwell bridge is given by the equation:

R1/R2 = L/C

By varying the resistance R1 and observing the galvanometer, the bridge can be balanced. Once the bridge is balanced, the value of R1 is measured, and the inductance can be calculated using the known values of R2 and C.

Advantages of Maxwell Bridge:
1. The Maxwell bridge provides a simple and accurate method for measuring inductance.

2. It is suitable for measuring both high and low inductances.

3. The bridge is easy to operate and does not require complex calculations.

4. It can be used for both laboratory and field measurements.

Conclusion:
The Maxwell bridge is commonly used for measuring inductance due to its simplicity and accuracy. It provides a convenient method for determining the inductance of a component and is widely used in electrical engineering and electronic industries.

Which of the following bridges is used for measuring the inductance?a)...
Bridge is a simple closed circuit extensively used for measuring component values such as resistance, inductance, capacitance and for other derived circuit parameters directly from the component values.
Bridge circuit compares the value of unknown quantity with a known quantity.
Maxwell's bridge measures an unknown inductance in terms of known capacitance. It is advanced form of the Wheatstone bridge which works on the principle of comparison. i.e. the value of unknown inductance is determined by comparing it with the known value or standard value.
Two methods are used to determine the self-inductance of the circuit:
1. Maxwell's inductance bridge
2. Maxwell's inductance capacitance bridge
