GMAT Question > If the average (arithmetic mean) of 5 numbers...

If the average (arithmetic mean) of 5 numbers j, j + 5, 2j - 1, 4j -2, and 5j- 1 is 8, what is the value of j?

- a)1/3
- b)7/13
- c)1
- d)3
- e)8

Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Arthmetic means = sum of total numbers /numbers

(j + j + 5 + 2j-1 + 4j - 2 + 5j - 1)/5 = 8

(13j + 5 - 4)/5 = 8

(13j + 1) = 40

13j = 40 – 1 = 39

j = 39/13 = 3 ans.

(j + j + 5 + 2j-1 + 4j - 2 + 5j - 1)/5 = 8

(13j + 5 - 4)/5 = 8

(13j + 1) = 40

13j = 40 – 1 = 39

j = 39/13 = 3 ans.
