Structure of an Alkene

An alkene is a hydrocarbon that contains a carbon-carbon double bond (C=C). The double bond in an alkene consists of a sigma (σ) bond and a pi (π) bond.

Sigma (σ) Bond

- A sigma (σ) bond is formed by the head-on overlapping of atomic orbitals, which results in the sharing of electron density between the two bonding atoms.
- Sigma bonds are stronger than pi bonds because they have a greater overlap of electron density between the bonding atoms.

Pi (π) Bond

- A pi (π) bond is formed by the sideways overlapping of atomic orbitals, which results in the formation of a region of high electron density above and below the plane of the bonding atoms.
- Pi bonds are weaker than sigma bonds because they have a lesser overlap of electron density between the bonding atoms.

Double Bond in an Alkene

- The double bond in an alkene consists of one sigma (σ) bond and one pi (π) bond.
- The sigma bond is formed by the overlap of two sp2 hybrid orbitals, one from each carbon atom.
- The pi bond is formed by the overlap of two p orbitals, one from each carbon atom, which are perpendicular to the plane of the sigma bond.
- Since the sigma bond has a greater overlap of electron density between the bonding atoms, it is stronger than the pi bond.

Answer

Option (B) is correct because the double bond in an alkene consists of a sigma (σ) bond and a pi (π) bond and the sigma (σ) bond is stronger than the pi (π) bond.
