Types of Contraception Methods and their Effectiveness:

1. Barrier Methods:


  • Male Condom: A latex or polyurethane sheath worn over the penis to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. It is about 98% effective when used correctly.

  • Female Condom: A polyurethane pouch inserted into the vagina to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. It is about 95% effective when used correctly.

  • Diaphragm: A dome-shaped rubber cup inserted into the vagina that covers the cervix to block sperm. It is about 88% effective when used correctly.



2. Hormonal Methods:


  • Combined Oral Contraceptives: Pills containing synthetic hormones (estrogen and progestin) that prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. They are about 99% effective when used correctly.

  • Progestin-Only Pills: Pills containing only progestin that thicken cervical mucus and sometimes suppress ovulation. They are about 99% effective when used correctly.

  • Contraceptive Patch: A small patch worn on the skin that releases hormones to prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. It is about 99% effective when used correctly.

  • Contraceptive Implant: A small rod inserted under the skin that releases progestin to prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. It is about 99% effective when used correctly.

  • Contraceptive Injection: An injection of progestin that prevents ovulation and thins the lining of the uterus. It is about 94% effective when used correctly.



3. Intrauterine Devices (IUDs):


  • Copper IUD: A small device inserted into the uterus that releases copper, which immobilizes sperm and prevents fertilization. It is about 99% effective.

  • Hormonal IUD: A small device inserted into the uterus that releases progestin to prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. It is about 99% effective.



4. Sterilization:


  • Tubal Ligation: A surgical procedure that blocks or seals the fallopian tubes to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. It is more than 99% effective.

  • Vasectomy: A surgical procedure that cuts or blocks the vas deferens, preventing sperm from reaching the semen. It is more than 99% effective.



5. Natural Methods:


  • Fertility Awareness: Tracking menstrual cycles and avoiding intercourse during fertile periods. It is about 76-88% effective.
