Which of the following reaction undergoes in the forward direction:
  • a)
    C2H5OH + OH- → C2H5O-  + OH2
  • b)
    H2S + OH- → HS-  + OH2
  • c)

Because negative charge over S atom gets additional stability by conjugation through vacent 3d orbital of S ,so SH- is the most stable species and the reaction undergoes in the forward direction.

Why not d... because sp hyberdised carbon is elecnegative n acidic... anybody can tell

Vipin Singh answered Jan 20, 2019
In any reaction more acidic product will not form if more acidic product will form then reaction can't go in forward direction. in d part water is form which is more acidic than alkyne so d will not the ans . in A and c part also more acidic product water is form so not possible.
hope this helps.

Why not c is the answer
which is aldol condensation

Prem Bhambhu answered Sep 14, 2018
It only explain on the basis of OH^- and SH^-...SH^- is more stable than OH^- due to big size of s....so it carry - ve charge....thats why rxn going forward.

The c should go to forward direction because the anion can participate in resonance
