Sulphur and oxygen are known to form two compounds. The Sulphur content in one of these is 51% and in other is 41%.Show that this data is in agreement with the law of multiple proportions.?
Verified Answer
Sulphur and oxygen are known to form two compounds. The Sulphur conten...
In the first compound % of S = 51% , hence % of O will be = 49%
therefore if % of S = 1% , the % of O will be = 49 /51= 0.96.
In the second compound
the % of S = 41% , hence % of O will be = 59%
if % of S = 1% , % of O = 59/ 41 = 1.439
therefore the simple ratio between O: O in these oxide = 1.439/0.96  :  0.96/ 0.96 =  1.5 : 1 = 3:2 hence the law

Law of Multiple Proportions
The law of multiple proportions states that when two elements form more than one compound, the masses of one element that combine with a fixed mass of the other element are in ratios of small whole numbers.

Given Data
- Compound 1: Sulphur content = 51%
- Compound 2: Sulphur content = 41%

Analysis
To show that this data is in agreement with the law of multiple proportions, we need to calculate the ratio of the masses of Sulphur in the two compounds.
Let's assume the mass of Sulphur in Compound 1 is x grams. Therefore, the mass of Oxygen in Compound 1 would be (100 - 51) = 49 grams.
Similarly, for Compound 2, the mass of Sulphur would be y grams and the mass of Oxygen would be (100 - 41) = 59 grams.

Calculations
- For Compound 1:
- Ratio of Sulphur to Oxygen = x:49
- For Compound 2:
- Ratio of Sulphur to Oxygen = y:59
According to the law of multiple proportions, the ratio of x:49 and y:59 should be in small whole numbers.

Conclusion
By calculating the ratios, we can determine if they are in small whole numbers, thus confirming that the data is in agreement with the law of multiple proportions. This demonstrates the consistent behavior of elements in forming compounds based on simple ratios of their masses.
