Planet is an celestial object that revolves around the sun, has acquired hydrostatic equilibrium and has cleared its neighborhood.

Before the discovery of Pluto, we had discovered eight planets and there was still search going on for other possible planets. After Pluto was discovered, the final count was nine and everyone was happy. But, slowly more objects near the orbit of Pluto were started to be found. These trans-neptunian objects were together called as the Kuiper belt. At this point, the definition of planet came into debate. If Pluto was called a planet, then all these other objects must also be called as planets - and these were a lot in number. It was a great dilemma for these planetary scientists as there was not a strict definition of planet until this point. Thus, in 2006, the IAU gave three main points for qualifying as a planet -

The object should revolve around the Sun.
The object should have sufficient mass so that it can gravitationally assume a spherical shape.
The object should clear its path around the Sun.

Pluto successfully follows the first two, but it fails in the third condition. This demoted it to a dwarf planet. As an extra information, asteroids fail in the second and third conditions and hence are not planets.
