• Describe the initial management of COPD exacerbation 
• List the indications/contraindications for NIV 
• Understand set up and monitoring of NIV 
• List complications associated with NIV

Case 1 
A 75 year old man attends his GP with breathlessness over 
the last 6 months. He has been coughing up phlegm most 
days for the last few months, but worse over the last few 
days. He has smoked 20 cigarettes a day for the past 30 
years.  
 
On examination, sats are 93% on air, RR 24, temp 38.3, 
BP 124/75, HR 85. The chest shows widespread wheeze 
throughout.
