Agro Climate Zones of Himachal Pradesh

Shivalik Hill Zone

• The Shivalik Hill Zone has a subtropical climate, covering the foothills and valley areas ranging from 350 to 650 meters above sea level.
• This zone encompasses about 35% of the state's geographical area and approximately 40% of its cultivated land.
• The primary crops cultivated in this zone include Wheat, Maize, Paddy, Gram, Sugarcane, Mustard, Potato, and various vegetables.

Mid Hill Zone

• This zone ranges from 651 meters to 1,800 meters above sea level and features a mild temperate climate.
• Occupying approximately 32% of the total geographical area and 37% of the cultivated land in the State, it is a significant agricultural region.
• Major crops cultivated in this zone include Wheat, Maize, Barley, Black Gram, Beans, and Paddy.
• The region shows great promise for growing cash crops such as Off-Season Vegetables and Ginger, as well as producing high-quality seeds for temperate vegetables like Cauliflower and root crops.

High Hill Zone

• Ranging from 1,801 to 2,200 meters above sea level, this zone boasts a humid temperate climate and alpine pastures.
• It covers around 35% of the total geographical area and 21% of the cultivated land in the State.
• Commonly grown crops here include Wheat, Barley, Lesser Millets, Pseudo-cereals (Buckwheat and Amaranthus), Maize, and Potato.
• The area is well-suited for producing quality seed Potatoes and temperate Vegetables, and it is rich in pastures and meadows.

Cold Dry Zone

• The Cold Dry Zone represents areas with higher elevations, typically characterized by colder and drier conditions.
• These regions are challenging for agriculture due to limited water availability and harsh climatic conditions.
• Farmers in these zones often focus on drought-resistant crops such as barley, pulses, and oilseeds.
• Techniques like rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation are crucial for sustaining agriculture in these areas.
