Borra Caves

• Located on the Eastern coast of India within the Anantagiri Hill range of the Araku Valley, Borra Caves span approximately 2 square kilometers and sit at an elevation of about 1,400 meters above sea level. Discovered in 1807 by William King George of the Geological Survey of India, these caves are renowned for their karstic limestone formations, reaching depths of up to 80 meters. Legend has it that a small temple within the caves was erected by locals following a religious event involving a cow falling through a hole in the cave's roof, leading to the discovery of a stone resembling a Shivalingam.
• Visitors to the caves can observe various wildlife such as bats and golden geckos, as well as flora like mosses and brown-to-green algae. Illuminating the interiors are sixty-three lamps powered by mercury, sodium vapor, and halogen, enhancing the cave's beauty.
