Ding Liren Becomes China's First World Chess Champion

Ding Liren made history by becoming China's first world chess champion. In a rapid-play tie-break showdown held in Kazakhstan, he emerged victorious over Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi. Both players had accumulated seven points each after the initial 14 games played in Astana.
The tie-break round, also held in Astana, limited each player to only 25 minutes for their moves, with an additional 10 seconds per move. Although Ding is higher-rated in faster formats, he had participated in minimal official competitions featuring rapid-play chess since January 2020.

Indian Air Force Takes Part in Exercise INIOCHOS-23

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is actively participating in Exercise INIOCHOS-23, a multinational air exercise hosted by the Hellenic Air Force in Greece. The exercise, taking place from April 24 to May 4, 2023, is stationed at the Andravida Air Base. Four Su-30 MKI aircraft and two C-17 aircraft from the Indian Air Force are involved in the exercise. The primary objective of this joint exercise is to enhance international cooperation, synergy, and interoperability among the participating Air Forces. The exercise simulates a realistic combat scenario involving various types of air and surface assets, facilitating professional interactions and the exchange of best practices among the participating contingents.

India's Mairaj Ahmad and Ganemat Sekhon Secure Skeet Mixed Team Gold

Indian shooters Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon achieved victory by clinching the gold medal in the skeet mixed team event at the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup in Egypt. They outperformed their Mexican opponents, Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodriguez, with a score of 6-0. This win marked the second gold medal in the mixed team event for Ganemat Sekhon, as well as the fifth senior ISSF medal for Mairaj.
Although they did not secure medals in the individual skeet competitions, the Indian duo showcased exceptional skills, scoring a combined total of 143 out of 150 in the qualification round. Their dominant performance in the final series led them to a historic gold medal victory.

A K Mohanty Appointed as Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission

Ajit Kumar Mohanty, a renowned physicist and Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has been appointed as the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. Mohanty, who assumed the position of BARC director in March 2019, holds a Ph.D. from the Mumbai University.
Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to nuclear physics research and has held prestigious positions in various organizations, including serving as the spokesperson for the India-CMS collaboration, director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, and director of the Physics Group at BARC. He has also served as a CERN Scientific Associate.

Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day

While May 1 is globally recognized as International Labour Day, it also holds historical significance for the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. On this day in 1960, following the division of the former state of Bombay on linguistic grounds, the foundations of Maharashtra and Gujarat were established. The two states celebrate this occasion with great enthusiasm through parades, events, and ceremonies.
