Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building on the 28th of May. He sought blessings from high priests of various 'adheenams' in Tamil Nadu, holding the holy sceptre in his hand. During the ceremony, he also installed the historic Sengol in the Lok Sabha chamber. Mr. Modi, dressed in traditional attire, entered the Parliament premises through Gate No. 1 and was welcomed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The new Parliament building boasts a seating capacity of 1,272, making it more spacious than the existing complex. It is equipped with state-of-the-art measures and cutting-edge technology. Some notable features include multimedia display units in front of each MP's seat, biometrics for ease of voting, a digital language translation system, and programmable microphones.
The Sengol, a symbol of governance in Tamil kingdoms of the past, is a five-feet long sceptre made of silver and gold. It was handed over by Lord Mountbatten to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14, 1947, as a symbol of the transfer of power. The Sengol was then displayed in The Allahabad Museum.
