Democracy - The best way forward for Indian Union Notes - UPSC

 Fortunately, unfortunately or incidentally YES - despite numerous limitations and shortcomings democracy is necessarily the least worst form of government in India. [the terminology least worst is used by Dr. Ambedkar while describing the constitution of India]

1. European nations have homogeneous population which is not the case in India. Hence, obviously Europeans can have unanimity on an issue and make faster decisions and implementation whereas India cannot.
2. Geographically India is a huge country and therefore, theoretically only democratically elected government can give balanced justice to all the citizen.
3. If dictatorship is an alternative to democracy, no single person can rule a country like India. Moreover, after death of the dictator the country might reach a stage of anarchy which is more dangerous.
4. In democracy, the citizen get a chance to replace the government which may not be the case in dictatorship. Generally once a dictator assumes the post, the change is possible only case of his death whether natural or otherwise.
5. Decisions in dictatorship depend upon personal likes and dislikes as well as whims of the dictator and bureaucrats. Many a times the shortsighted decisions lead to incorrect allocation of resources.
6. We always dream of a benevolent dictatorship, however, history has proved that not even 10% of the dictators worked exclusively in the national interest.
