Key Points of the Story
Detailed Summary
Rama Natha, the son of a wealthy landlord, inherited a lot of land but neglected it because he was obsessed with finding a magic potion that could turn anything into gold. He spent all his money and time searching for this potion, often being cheated by people who promised to help him. His wife, Madhumati, worried about their future because of his wasteful spending.
One day, a famous sage named Mahipati came to town. Rama Natha became his follower and asked him about the magic potion. To his surprise, the sage said he knew about it. The sage explained that Rama Natha needed to plant banana plants and water them himself. During winter, he had to collect the dew from the leaves and store it. Once he had five liters of dew, the sage would chant magic words to turn it into a potion that could change objects into gold. Though this task seemed long and difficult, Rama Natha was determined to try.
Rama Natha went home and cleaned his fields, which had been unused for years. He planted many banana plants and took good care of them, collecting dew in the winter. Madhumati helped by selling the bananas at the market, earning good money. Over six years, they expanded their banana plantation and finally collected five liters of dew.
Rama Natha took the dew to the sage, who performed a ritual and gave back the bottle, instructing Rama Natha to test it. When Rama Natha tried to turn a copper vessel into gold, nothing happened. Feeling cheated, he confronted the sage. The sage smiled and called Madhumati, who brought a box full of gold coins.
The sage explained that there was no magic potion. The wealth they had was the result of their hard work. By taking care of the plantation and selling the fruits, they had earned this money. The sage admitted to tricking Rama Natha to teach him the value of hard work. Realizing the wisdom in the sage's words, Rama Natha worked even harder on his plantation, understanding that true wealth comes from effort, not magic.
This story by Sudha Murty teaches the importance of hard work and perseverance in creating real wealth.
