hi in this short clip I'd like to
outline the six ways in which people
typically manage to help you select the
right approach for any situation the six
styles we have are tell sell negotiate
collaborate coach and facilitate each
style is different and can be
appropriate depending on the situation
in telling style the manager is clear
about what they want and tends to
dictate what their view or decision is
to others it can be quick and decisive
but may be more one way than two-way and
less likely to generate debate or
contributions from others when selling
the manager is also clear about what
they want but tends to use a more
persuasive style or approach rather than
dictating a decision they build a case
looking to get the other person's buy-in
to the arguments they are presenting
when negotiating the manager is still
clear about their own preferred outcome
but understands that they may have to
accommodate the other person's
requirements - so when negotiating the
manager is prepared to give and take to
trade or make concessions to find a
win-win when collaborating the manager
may still have a clear view about the
preferred outcome but is willing to
discuss others ideas about what that is
and how to get there in this style the
manager is one voice amongst many and
others have equal influence over the
decision and how it is made as a coach
the manager is more interested in
helping the other person to find their
own solution and uses a range of skills
to help that individual get there though
the coach may also offer suggestions
along the way and finally a manager
using a facilitative style will set the
main requirement in general terms and
then encourage the other person or group
to find their own solutions and
approaches in this role the manager has
little if any preference as to the final
outcome or way of getting there these
six Styles tend to move from directive
to non directive from pushing
information and decision
into others to pulling in decisions from
them so how do you choose which style is
best ideally a manager will choose a
particular style because it is best for
that situational context for example a
directive for telling style might be
best in a crisis where time is short or
there is unhelpful indecision in the
group but it may not be best if others
need to be consulted or have a greater
understanding or ownership in this
situation selling or collaboration might
be best we are suggesting that choosing
a style should be a clear and conscious
decision one made through deliberate
choice and based on the situation rather
than on personal preference or your
dominant skill set put another way any
competent manager should have the
ability to operate in any of these six
styles whereas perhaps some managers
operate in a style they feel most
comfortable with and skilled in and for
the same reasons avoid other styles
which would actually be more appropriate
