okay welcome out to lesson number 14 I
believe today quite simply we're going
to be talking about reading notes that
are flat off of the staff and playing
them on the keyboard so to do this first
you have to understand what sharps and
flats are on what half steps are so if
you don't know that I suggest you look
at some of my previous lessons where I
discussed that and you also have to
obviously know how to read notes on the
staff and know where the notes are on
the keyboard which I covered in the
first couple of lessons so anyway that's
about it and I'll see you in a second
alright so before we were talking about
how to play actually how to read sharp
notes on the treble clef and bass clef
and how to play those on the keyboard
well now we're going to talk about how
to play flat notes from the treble clef
and bass clef reading them off the staff
and playing them on the keyboard so
let's take a look here at what we have
here the first one we have here is a
line of treble clef notes and if you
remember the treble clef we're going to
be playing them with our right hand so
kind of up towards this end of the
keyboard let's take a look at the first
one we have here so first we have a note
with a flat in front of it let's see
here that's the second space of the
treble clef and we know that of course
is a so this is going to be a flat
remember that's the a right above middle
C so right there so a flat will be right
here
let's try the next one so here's number
two or measure number two we have one on
the fourth line of the treble clef and
that is going to be D of course
and remember with flat we're just going
to go one note to the left so here is D
flat the next one taking a look here is
the top line of course we know that's F
is that F right here nope
that F is a little bit higher than quite
a bit higher than middle C actually this
F is going to be the first space
well this F is going to be that top line
so if you're confused about that you can
go back and see those previous videos or
look online for a resource to get more
practice about where these notes are
located on the keyboard so here's F F
flat is going to be which note that's
right F flat is actually e those are
equivalents let's take a look at the
next one we have a C here and that's a C
flat of course we know that's not middle
C this is going to be this C and there C
flat take a look at the next one we have
that is a little bit off the staff so
let's find the closest note you do know
I would be willing to bet that the
closest note you do know is either going
to be middle C or that bottom line e
either way it is actually in between
those two notes so that note is going to
be D flat there we go breezin right
along here we have the next one bottom
line treble clef we know that's e this
is e flat
the next one is going to be F flat so we
had a flat before but this one's a
different one this one is actually a bit
closer to middle C not very high up on
the keyboard right towards the middle
and this is going to be remember that
flat is going to be the same as E and
now let's take a look here we are three
measures from the end we have the third
line of the treble clef we know that's B
of course and this one is B flat so
we're just going to go one note right to
the left
okay next to last one we have a right at
the top of the staff a little bit
outside of the staff and I'm willing to
bet the closest note you do know
hopefully is that F right at the top
line so this notes going to be right
after that F and it's going to be flat
so G flat last one I'll give you a
second to think about last measure here
on the treble clef top space so what
note is that and that's going to be e of
course now that II the C well no because
this C is actually going to be the
bottom line this one's a little bit
higher up so here's the e were looking
for and because we have a flat in front
of the note we're looking for E flat
which will be right here there you go so
that's playing flats with the treble
clef now we're going to take a look at
the bass clef so let's get that a
picture up on the board shall we so
here's our bass cleff line so we're
going to take a look at this first one
here we have the third line of the bass
clef and we know that's D and remember
we're going to be this way on the piano
on to the left so or down on the bottom
so here's our D we're looking for and
here's our D flat
all right let's move on in the next one
we have the top space of the bass clef
that would be which note you can pause
if you need another second to think
about it but that note is G and this one
is actually specifically going to be
gene
let's take a look at the next one a
little bit outside the staff so you know
pick the note you do know which will
either be a that top line or middle C
right above it either way this notes in
between those two so you can either go
up from a or down for middle C either
way you get to the same note so that's
me and this one's going to be b-flat
so we just lowered a half-step next one
we are four over that is the fourth line
of the bass clef from the bottom
hopefully you know this one this is F
this is going to be F flat which is also
e
on the next one this one is going to be
think about it for a second hopefully
you know this by now this one's going to
be G flat so it's not going to be this
one because this one is a bit closer to
middle C that would be up higher on the
staff this one's a bit further down so
this is an octave down and we're going
to play G flat the next one we are one
two three four five six from the left
the six measure of the line and we have
that bottom space that bottom space is
going to be which one what do you think
I'm willing to bet I'd put my money on a
flat it's going to be the safe flat down
here because this a flat would be a lot
closer to middle C which you know in the
bass clef is on top of the staff under
its own little ledger line next one we
have B flat we are the fourth measure
from the end so fourth measure all the
way from the right so a B flat and that
B flats right here we're going to breeze
along with the rest of these think about
this next one for a second and that's
going to be e flat right there alright
what about this next one think about
this note should look very familiar to
you and it should look a lot like middle
C because it is although specifically
it's C flat
so here's C we'll see and here C flat C
flat is also which note C flat is also B
so those are equivalents and the very
last one today we have in a oh maybe I
should let you think about that for a
second but anyway it's an A flat so that
a flat I would say is pretty close to
middle C so here's middle C there's our
a we want and here is a flat
I'm actually knowing that these are
whole notes I should be holding these
all for four beats but I just kind of
wrote them as whole notes just for just
to practice finding the notes on the
staff obviously when you play a real
song you want to hold it for the correct
amount so anyway there you go there's
playing flats on reading them on the
staff and playing them on the keyboard
we're going to put all this new stuff
into practice pretty soon I'm going to
make some new playing examples for us to
play and we're going to incorporate
sharps flats some chords and maybe we'll
start to place two hands together at the
same time I believe next lesson I'll
mention this in your house well I
believe the next lessons may change will
be a little bit more rhythmic work
showing you some new stuff there now
like I said I'll incorporate everything
and then we'll do some more playing
examples so anyway I'll see you in a
second for the outro that concludes
lesson 14 all we talked about was
finding notes that were flat reading
them off the staff and playing them on
the keyboard so next lesson we're going
to be talking about eighth notes so a
new rhythmic subject to talk about we
haven't done rhythm in a while so I'll
brush you up on all the things we talked
about so far real quick and then we'll
get into how to count eighth notes and
what eighth notes are I mean then after
that I believe we're doing some playing
examples we'll see it's subject to
change a little bit
